So far DP51 might be the "stock broker" of this thread.

Yup good call on the dominance of the Defense

That was hardly a "wild" prediction.

Seriously Zimp, did you really think we'd have a top 10 defense and lead the league in INTs and takeaways? I thought we'd improved greatly but I'd definitely call DP's prediction "wild" back at the end of July.

Well, I wouldn't have called it a "wild" prediction. Payton didn't give up a quarter of a million dollars for mediocrity (i.e., middle of the pack defense). As BHS said, he did exactly what he was supposed to do.

And, by the way, we're currently at 15th in total defense. Sometimes, perception isn't reality.

Of course Payton didn't give up 250g for mediocrity however I don't know how many people really thought Williams would turn that unit around so quickly. I remember people questioning whether or not our guys would be able to pick up the various new defensive packages in such a short time. I think a lot of us thought the learning curve was going to be longer and that they'd finally pull it together after the first 4 games or so.

As for being 15th overall defensively, you're right but before the Atlanta game we were ranked 11th and we were ranked higher than that earlier. We're giving up a lot of yardage because teams are playing from behind and trying to keep up with us. Although we're ranked 15th overall, we're ranked 1st in INTs which is more telling than total yds given up.

It is ok for DP51 to be right every once in a while. ;)

Quit pissin' in the guy's Cheerios man. Weren't we supposed to have a better defense under Gibbs as well? I mean do you really think that Payton wanted Gibbs to run a defense that constantly gave up huge plays? Weren't we supposed to have had one of the best DTs in the league drafting Jonathan Sullivan? Weren't we going to have a shut down corner with Jason David? How many people have shit the bed once they got to New Orleans? Or many other teams for that matter? I know Coach Williams has a stellar resume, but things just sometimes don't work the way they're supposed to... you know it looks good on paper kind of thing. I'll be perfectly honest... I didn't have the same kind of faith that DP51 had in Williams immediately turning the defense around like he has. Top 15, top 10, whatever the stats say doesn't reflect the about face that this defense has made.
It's cold and windy. I can assure you.
