Saints Bring Back Returner Roby

Saints Bring Back Returner RobyThe New Orleans Saints have re-signed wide receiver/kickoff return specialist Courtney Roby.

Roby was one of the team's final cuts on Sept. 5 when the Saints trimmed their roster from 75 players to 53. But the team has re-signed Roby after an inconsistent day of returns from wide receiver Robert Meachem in Sunday's season-opening 45-27 victory over the Lions.

Against the Lions, Meachem returned six kickoffs for 24.7 yards. But his average was helped by returns of 42 and 41 yards. He looked hesitant on a few of his others, though.

By bringing Roby back into the fold, the Saints have an established kickoff returner.

Roby signed with the Saints early in the 2008 season and served as the team's primary kickoff returner before landing on injured reserve. He averaged 24.8 yards on 19 returns last season.

In 31 career games, the fourth-year wide receiver has caught 23 passes for 317 yards and a touchdown and averaged 23.2 yards on 46 kickoff returns. He played in three games this preseason and averaged 21.8 yards on six kickoff returns along with one reception for eight yards.

To make room for Roby, the Saints waived tight end Buck Ortega.
