A House on Poor Footing Should Fall…Right?

Well, here we are..months into a situation we never thought we’d be dealing with. Our team has been chosen to be the “example” of the NFL’s new attitude on safety. Never mind anything else that any other team has done in the past, we will be held up like a severed head as a warning to every other team not to step across an imaginary line that frankly, keeps moving and changing.

Lets just clear a few things up for those who think we’re all completely blind to any wrong-doing by our team. We know bounties are wrong. We also know pay-for-performance is wrong. We are well aware that if our team did anything wrong, they should be punished for it. But if the NFL thinks we’ll stand idly by and watch our team be accused of something that we’ve yet to see any strong evidence of, they’re sorely mistaken.

Yes, we’ve seen proof of PFP, and yes we believe it was wrong, our team should have stopped when it was told to and any punishment they receive for this, we can accept. But why on earth would we be OK with just taking a mans word on our guilt, a man who has shown himself to be arbitrary and unfair with players of every team. We’ve watched as slowly the evidence has come out and one of our biggest problems…It keeps changing. Our supposed “cart-off” hits keep changing…first they were against Favre & Warner, then were against the Bills and this latest statement says it was the Panthers. Scott Fujita was originally suspended for participation in a bounty program, but in this most recent version, his suspension is reduced because while he wasn’t part of this supposed program, he didn’t confront his superiors about it. Ask around, I’m sure you’ll find many players that don’t tell their coaches what to do. And the very foundation of this case, the sworn affidavits from Gregg Williams and Mike Cerrulo, which if you take off your “Saints Hate” glasses and read them…completely contradict each other.

I’m also going to say this for the last time. Why would these guys lie? Well, Williams has to have permission from Goodell to return to work. Williams is the same man that came out and immediately admitted to running a PFP program and yet his most recent statement to the NFL put all the blame for the program on Vilma. If this doesn’t bring his credibility into question, I don’t know what will. Cerrulo is a man who was fired by the Saints, certainly not an ideal witness or someone whose word is solid.

And yet, we’re continually told to take off our tin foil hats, to shut up and take our punishment, to accept that our team are cheaters. Would any other fan base accept this? I highly doubt it. Mainstream sports media continues to wear its NFL blinders, I suppose not to upset their apple-cart of access. A few writers are finally starting to catch on, and I applaud them for that. Someone needs to recognize the abuse of power here, because this could and may happen to another team if a power-hungry leader who can’t see beyond his own agenda goes unchecked.

We are not asking to be given special treatment, as I said before, we’ll take our punishment for what we’ve done. What we want is clear evidence, a transparent hearing and a little honesty. In what world is that asking too much? Anyone else would want the same thing. I think many people blindly believe these things just because it gives them another reason to dislike a team they already disliked. But what happens when your team is accused, tried & fried with little to no solid evidence? Will you just shut-up and take it or will you want to see actual evidence against your team? Something to think about for everyone spouting off how guilty we are.

Even if you believe we’re the most evil team to ever step on a football field. Go back and look at how many times the NFL’s evidence has changed to suit them. If you can’t see the inconsistencies then perhaps your tin-foil hat has fallen over your eyes. Somewhere in the middle of all this mess lies the truth and as a fan, I can only hope one day it will come out, no matter who it favors.
